This years Baking and Sweets show experience was very different than last years because this year I was a volunteer. I planned on working 2 days but since I got a call to work on Saturday my volunteer career was cut short!
We were asked to wear black pants and we got a STAFF t-shirt to wear, so we kind a looked like little clones 🙂 After a little tour, me and a fellow volunteer Ngoc was put into the Air Transat booth. We had to invite people to sign up for a chance to win a free trip to Mexico. A lot of people were not interested and gave us a long speech about the situation over there right now. Some people just walked by like they never heard me saying “Would you like to win a free trip to Mexico?” which I said probably 300 times during the day 🙂 It was actually kind of fun to see how people were reacting and I know how I would of reacted, mostly like most of the people, just keep on walking or saying no thanks 😉 It was a very eye opening experience and I’m so grateful! We drained the iPad batteries by 6pm and since we were scheduled to finish at 7pm we were off an hour earlier. I would of preferred to have a paper and pen for the draw.
On our lunch break, a few people were discussing about how badly everything was organized and how the volunteers were not valued in this show. Not enough breaks was the biggest issue. As this was my first volunteer experience, I didn’t know what was ok and what wasn’t, so I was learning!
Also I mentioned to the other girls that I wanted to do the “Fondant 101” class on Saturday morning but the organizers said “No, you can’t take the class because you’re working”. I was fine with it until lunch time but then I got smarter 🙂 It was a one hour class on Saturday morning 10-11am. I got advice that as a volunteer I could have just told them I can start working at 11 am when the class is done!
We were given a coupon for lunch that we could use outside at the FoodCabbie. All that I could order was a poutine, everything else was stuffed with peppers. After eating that poutine, I felt very sick for a few hours.
This year there wasn’t too many vendors and it wasn’t as interesting as last year. I think last year everybody wanted to see Buddy Valastro 😉 I remember, so did I 🙂 My absolute favourite booth this year was “Edible doghouse“. I bought a medium treat box, so cute.
I would of gone back to volunteer on Saturday if I wasn’t called into work. All and all though, it was a fun experience! Oddly enough our booth was next to Chatelaine, enough said 🙂
And my favourite picture of all. We were very close to the airport, so every time I had a break, I went outside to watch the planes and took millions of pictures 🙂
